Lauren Gregory photographs her improvisational finger paintings every few strokes. In an interview with The Creators Project, Gregory described her time working with collective Aboveground Animation as an eye-opener:

“Being surrounded by other animators like Casey and Jacolby Satterwhite who have such strong voices was inspiring. Those guys aren’t afraid to be irreverant or let their sense of humor shine through. Some artists are funny people in private, but when it comes to their work, they get really serious and strip it of any personality. I think I used to do that before, and Aboveground Animation made me remember that my personality is an asset, not something to polish or hide in my paintings.”

Fortunately for us, that translates to GIFs such as “Dickmatized,” which is a really lovely painting of a dick swinging around. Seriously, this is so great:

Back in 2010, before they were curating controversial international biennials, DIS collaborated with the image-sharing website dump.fm to produce DIS/dump. The project represented a crowd-sourced, user-generated “lookbook” of absurdist “New Style Options in Real Time.”

Their curated documentation of the project is fantastic, and much of the content points to the fact that “fashion” is essentially just censorship of nudity.

Nadine Faraj’s blobby, wet watercolor style is unsurprisingly great at capturing how blobby and weird and fluid-filled the human body is. She came to our attention this week because she has a show opening tomorrow night at Anna Zorina Gallery. Naked Revolt is a celebration of the international phenomenon of topless feminist protesters. Hell yeah!

But it’s pretty surprising how well these watercolors translate to GIF form. Watching this flesh jiggle and change skin color is a bit like an especially arty twerk-centric music video from that early aughts trend of songs in which people rapped about all the different ethnicities of boys and/or girls they liked (does anyone else remember that being a thing?).

We’re pretty pumped to open the latest F.A.G. project, Strange Genitals tomorrow night at AICAD. The exhibition, as its title suggests, is a collection of weird organs invented, depicted, or otherwise enhanced by artists. Although the show features a lot of fleshy skin tones, it was actually inspired by something totally inorganic: these futuristic fuckmachine tower GIFs from Jonathan Monaghan.

Jonathan sent us this series last year, when we were looking for architectural/landscape inspired work for our exhibition Geographically Indeterminate Fantasies: The Animated GIF as Place. We ended up showing another series of his, but knew this one needed to be seen. Thus, Strange Genitals was born—squeezed into the world from a baroque steampunk orifice being penetrated by a futuristic robot phallus.

Someone thinks this butt GIF belongs in a museum, right between a larger-than-life “Mona Lisa” and “American Gothic.” We’re not sure which museum, though, as the “Mona Lisa” is in the Louvre and “American Gothic” is at the Art Institute of Chicago. No matter, if this exhibition ever went on tour it would undoubtedly be a NSFW blockbuster. Curators take note.

Based on the watermark (or wall text?) that someone might be named Mark Heffron. The best detail in this GIF is the janitor, taking a break from his duties to watch these hands spastically whack the butt. Is he a tiny sculpture of a janitor? Or are these reproductions and ass just really enormous? Like all the best exhibitions, this one raises more questions than it answers.

For all the GIFs there are floating around the web, there are still times when I’m surprised not to see a surplus of GIFs around a particular subject. Take, for instance ancient erotic Japanese prints. You’d think the octopus below would already be animated, but no such luck. There are, of course, a few examples of Japanese prints that have been animated, but none we’ve found are porny. As such, we’ve collected a few images we think would benefit from animation. I’ve always been a fan of Otto Splotch’s weird-as-hell punk illustrations. The blobby figures in his tableaus—who are usually engaged in some combination of sex, drugs, rock-n-roll, or crime—feature details from bad stick-n-poke tattoos to genital-like faces and face-like genitals.

Obviously, when I discovered that Otto Splotch makes GIFs (including this one of a strange shower orgy) there was no question that he would be our NSFW GIF of the Hump Day.

Of all the NSFW GIFs of the Hump Day that I’ve found, this probably has the weirdest origin. And that’s really saying something.

It’s an illustration from the right-wing blog The Last Crusade, in which an alarm has been sounded that former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano was behind a scheme to roll-out nude-grabbing full-body scanners at airport TSA checkpoints along with the complicit Obama administration back in 2010. According to the bloggers, Muslims specifically wouldn’t be subjected to the technology—which in theory could be used to harvest n00dz of the nubile daughters of good Christian airline passengers, via the hands and USB drives of salacious TSA employees.

Huh.

While invasion of privacy is certainly something to consider, I haven’t heard of this being an issue in the past seven years. And FYI: the full body scanners are totally optional (even to non-Muslim passengers!). Those opting out just get a more annoying and time-consuming pat down instead.

As a GIF, it’s not so impressive—it merely shows an unflattering photo of Janet Napolitano and a naked woman alternating between positive and negative. If this is the porn the TSA has been supposedly hoarding, they’d be much better off digging around on those laptops they make you remove from luggage for the X-ray.

From 2009-2011, artist Rodell Warner set up a private photobooth at Trinidad and Tobago’s Erotic Art Week where visitors could take anonymous (or not) selfies in GIF form. The results are basically what one would expect, with some creative standouts.

I like that you can basically give people any type of camera (webcam, cameraphone, Polaroid) and n00dz will inevitably happen.
